The Afternoon Activity Center provides an informal framework for children from the ages of 6-21 and is an extension of the regular school day. The purpose of the program is (all under the guise of fun) to utilize the child's free time and maximize the personal rehabilitative process of each child. Everyone is involved in this process: parents, teachers, social workers and others.
Every afternoon, hundreds of children and teens with various disabilities (Down's Syndrome, hyperactivity, autistic tendencies, cerebral paralysis, cognitive difficulties, etc.) come to the center and participate in a plethora of therapeutic activities. These include hydrotherapy, speech therapy, physiotherapy, computer-based therapy, dance therapy, multisensory therapy (Snoezelen), music therapy, animal therapy, drama therapy and art therapy. Each child participates in the program both within a group framework and during specified sessions, according to an individually designed program. This combination process is devised to enhance the child's abilities and potential, increasing his chances for better societal integration during his adult years.
While a child is participating in the Afternoon Activity Program, parents and siblings are free to catch up on their work, personal development and spend time with one another. In this manner, the program also helps to keep a family balanced, substantially contributing to a normative and healthy life. After supper in the early evening, the Shalva children return home. Happy and relaxed, they can spend some quality time with their family before going to bed.
