Kili_NewYears_v6.230 superstars from around the world will be climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro on behalf of SHALVA’s children in October.

Arlene Rosenberg from Toronto was one of the first to sign up. She has been a supporter of SHALVA’s for many years and also took part in the Jerusalem marathon for us. Arlene was due to climb with the group, but as her daughter’s due date coincided with the trek, she climbed in August.

Arlene set off on the 5th August 2015 and summited to Uluru Peak around the 12th August. We spoke to her a few days ago and she was still buzzing from her amazing adventure. This is what she wrote to the group going in October.

Hi Fellow Hikers
I really don’t know where to begin. Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro was always a dream of mine and when Perry asked me to climb for SHALVA it was a double header. Two years ago I ran in the Jerusalem marathon representing SHALVA. All you had to do was look around at the smiling faces of these kids and their parents and you realize how lucky and fortunate we are. They face challenges every day so I could certainly face this challenge.

WOW! Let me tell you..this is really a challenge. With each step I took up the mountain I kept telling myself if these kids could do it so can I. I don’t want to scare you..but you must be prepared. This is no walk in the park. Having said that the thrill of reaching the summit is beyond any words I can describe. You have just walked all night…you take tiny steps thinking I will never get there..then it happens the sun starts to is the most beautiful sunrise you will ever pinch are in Africa on Mt Kilimanjaro and the adrenalin kicks in. You will make it to the top..what an incredible feeling. There is so much more to see than just the top. Each and every day offers something so indescribable. The beauty of your surroundings, the friendly guides (who really do become like family) and the lifelong friends you will make. Each one plays an important part in getting you to the summit..each one holds a memory of your life long achievement. I want to wish you all good luck in fulfilling your dream but remember to stop every once in a while and look around, look where you are. Open your tent at night and look at the sky..the stars are beautiful ..the sunrise is stunning and to me it was very spiritual ..there is nothing to compare to an African sky…

Good luck to all our really is a journey…make it yours..
